Mixed Media

"The Scorned Lover" Oil Painting. Recently I have been studying a surplus of Tattoo works and wanted to see if I could immolate that style into one of my paintings. With the study of Lesley Dill's particular style I came up with this particular painting and used a specific wordage to add meaning to the woman.

Artist Statement

Last semester I completed a series of paintings on my favorite musicians, although the feedback was positive the concept was not clearly understood through the artwork I provided. As a result I decided to do more research and take a different approach to artwork. Due to my recent fascination with poetry I arrived at the point where I wanted to incorporate my poems into my paintings. Lately, I have come to the realization that nothing in Life lasts forever and that is a reoccurring theme that keeps coming up when brainstorming new ideas. After completing the series of artwork that contained my poems the feedback I received was not as expected. Overall the poems were being overlooked and the only portion that was noticed for the most part was the painting aspect of the works. At that point I began to brainstorm different ways I could shorten the poems so they would not be so lengthy and then still be able to incorporate the use of words into my paintings.

Lately, I have been studying the works of Lesley Dill. She uses words in her artwork but in more of a sculptural manner but I am still able to study her techniques and different approaches to provide me with a better direction in which I would like for my artwork to proceed. I recently completed a series of works that were highly influenced by the style of Lesley Dill but this series I must say caused a huge conflict within me due to the fact that once I shared these works with my peers the feedback was very positive and offered up great conversation, But on the other hand when presenting these same works to my capstone committee the feedback was a little discouraging because overall they felt as though the situations I am trying to portray through my works were not coming through as clearly as they should be which is understandable and with alot of deliberation I became more comfortable and understood what was being advised for me to change.

Now I am at the point where I have finished the Capstone I phase and have a better grasp on how I need to change my approach to my artwork. I deal a lot with situational art basically portraying humans in those situations that our society often avoids because they are such series issues. For example, Abuse, Abortions & Broken Relationships. After consultation with my committee I have decided to take a different approach to my painting style and not focus so much on the technical details but really have my main focus be on the exact situation I am trying to provide through my art without using the aid of adding the words in the end. I plan to take complete advantage of this Christmas break and produce as much work as possible. Overall this Capstone I phase has been a very helpful experience.

One of the beginning pieces I made dealing directly with my "Trey vs Jerry" theme. Tried to capture the different personalities but use a similar color pallet to emphasize on how they are of the same person.

"Technology ruined Love" Acrylic, Speaks to how I feel as though Technology has more of a negative effect on the relationships of today's society. It brings us closer in some aspects but also keeps us further apart in the same sense.

"My Letter to God" Watercolor 12 x 16in. Decided to really shine light on the Religious side of me and give my viewer's a better understanding of who I am outside of art.

"Forever Never Together" Print. Speaks to the situation of when you may want to leave someone but something keeps holding you back from officially moving on.

"Unwanted Blessing" Acrylic. I try to make my works revolve around real life situations and this is something that ultimately everyone no matter race or sex can relate to.

"Trey vs Jerry" Watercolor 12 x 16

Imagery dealing with the idea of me having two separate parts to my personality. This stage in my life eventually became resolved and these two works were essentially the ending portion of that series.

Artist Proposal

Since my previous artist proposal the direction I want my artwork to go in has changed dramatically. After I completed the series of paintings that consisted of my favorite musicians the feedback I received was overall good but I what I was trying to convey through those particular artworks did not come out so clear to the audience. With that I decided to do a lot of more research about myself as well as other artists and change my approach to my artwork. With my recent fascination with poetry I have decided to incorporate poems into my paintings. Lately I have come to the realization that life does not last forever and in the same essence that I still listen to the music of artists who have passed I want to make more meaningful artwork to the extent that it can really touch my audience. I now approach my artwork with the idea of visually giving a representation of me and what I would like the world to remember me by in the artistic aspect. With all of this being said I have recently done several poetic paintings and will be looking forward to doing more after this point. After I feel this portion is completed I will then dive back into the series of using different imagery of the Trey vs. Jerry theme because I still feel I have so much more inside of me that I need to share. Furthermore, I have become more familiar with different styles of creative writing and have closely studied the works of Lesley Dill and Ann Hamilton. Dill is more of a sculptural artist who makes her own forms and proceeds to use the imagery of words on top of these forms, sometimes even painting full bodies and writing on different body parts. Hamilton on the on the other hand incorporates more of the video into her works, specifically speaking on her video of the wiping away of letter I would like to use these two styles in my future works because I recently been struggling with how I want the viewer to encounter my poetry. I write very lengthy poems and that often gets overlooked because we live in a world where time is of the essence and people want to grasps ideas as quick as possible. So with that being said I want to figure out different ways to shorten my poems or use them in different manners that they catch more of the viewer’s attention and make them actually see parts of themselves in the poems. I want there to always be a connection with the viewer of my work whether it be good or bad I still want there to be room for a reaction. Overall I feel that I am headed into a positive direction in really educating myself on what exactly I want my artwork to be about as well as how I want the interactions to happen with my audiences. The first poem I wrote “Temporary Forever’s” is such a reoccurring theme for me that it really does motivate me to make each one of my works meaningful because tomorrow is never promised so I must make the best work I can today. Overall I will continue to try and find new innovative and interesting ways to illustrate my thoughts and visions through my art.

Dwelling on the Past

12 x 18 Watercolor

This poem directly addresses an issue that I feel we all fall victim of at times. That would be how most of us do not really know how to let things of the past go. I honestly feel that when we dwell on the past it ultimately keeps us from being focused on the future.
